Castles, Gardens, Forts & Country Parks
Fort George sits behind its massive grass-topped artillery defences on an isolated spit of land jutting west into the Moray Firth at Ardersier, 11 miles north east of Inverness.
Fort Charlotte built in 1781 never saw action. It housed a garrison throughout the Napoleonic Wars and was later a base for the Royal Naval Reserve in Shetland.
Surrounded by the 120,000 acre Queensberry Estate, Country Park and grand Victorian gardens, Drumlanrig Castle was completed in 1691 by William Douglas, 1st Duke of Queensberry and is one of the first and most important renaissance buildings in the grand manner in Scotland.
Constructed between 1500 and 1550, Cadzow Castle was known as the castle in the woods of Hamilton. Sir James Hamilton of Finnart built it for his half brother, the second Earl of Arran. At present, only the exterior of the castle can be viewed.
